The SPCA Namibia is opening a new SPCA Branch in Henties Bay

“The SPCA Namibia is excited to announce its latest Branch addition to the umbrella organization; SPCA Henties Bay. The SPCA Henties Bay’s new management, formerly known as Angel Animals Home, knew they needed additional support and guidance for the sake of the animals in their care. They reached out to SPCA Namibia and enrollment discussions began, which included administrative paperwork, site visits, and animal care plans. The SPCA Henties Bay became an official Branch on 1 December 2024.” - Hanna Rhodin

Why is there a need for a SPCA Branch in Henties Bay?

“Henties Bay is home to a large number of stray dogs, and free-roaming dogs with homes that are not enclosed by a yard, which wander the town. Feral cats are also an issue. A large proportion of these wandering dogs are undersocialized or people selective, are very difficult to catch, and can be a safety concern for people, other animals, and traffic.

Some animals suffer from malnutrition and owners struggle to provide an adequate diet for their pets. Unfortunately, there is a big issue with ticks, fleas, and mange affecting cats and dogs in Henties Bay. Unsterilized animals keep giving birth to either planned or unwanted litters further putting strain on what often is already scarce food sources. Many are not able to afford veterinary care and medical treatment needed for their pets. Unfortunately, there is no permanent veterinarian in Henties Bay.” - Natasha Britz

The current setup

“The SPCA Henties Bay’s animal shelter can currently house about 20 dogs and about 40 cats. We have 15 dog kennels, two cattery areas, six cat cages, ten boarding dog kennels, and a newly built green dog garden where dogs can play and potential adopters can meet their match. We are also uniquely set up with boarding availability for horses, which currently house over 30 privately owned horses. The proceeds from the stables go directly to fund the SPCA operations and the care of the homeless pets. There are currently eight staff members split between taking care of the cats, dogs, and horses. Unfortunately, we do not have a vehicle to collect stray animals, but we try our best to assist where we can.” Natasha Britz

Looking ahead

“I think our most important promise from SPCA Henties Bay to our community is that we aim to work together, our community, our Municipality, our SPCA, and other hard working animal welfare organizations and groups, to help the maltreated, abandoned, abused, unsterilized and unvaccinated animals that so much need us. Any support from our community means the world to us.

For those interested in joining our first Annual General Meeting, we would like to welcome members of our community on Tuesday the 4th of February 2025 at 12h00  at LukZet, Henties Bay, where we will be electing our first Branch Committee.” - Natasha Britz

“The SPCA Henties Bay has an incredibly hardworking and enthusiastic team who really want to make positive changes for homeless animals. Now, the SPCA Henties Bay can officially collaborate with their Municipality, assist owners who are unable to keep their pets, investigate animal cruelty complaints, offer adoption of animals from the SPCA, and do the best that they can for the animals in their community. Financial and human resources are always a real consideration for any SPCA, which is a non-profit organization, and we hope that the Henties Bay community and donors from further away will help welcome our new SPCA in any way they are capable of, be it by donating funds or in-kind, adopting, volunteering, or helping spread awareness. We are excited to welcome SPCA Henties Bay to the SPCA Namibia team and are committed to providing them with guidance and support along the way.” - Hanna Rhodin

SPCA Background

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Namibia includes the SPCA Windhoek Shelter Operations and an additional eight branches throughout Namibia, of various size and scope. They are located in Grootfontein, Henties Bay, Keetmanshoop, Luderitz, Oshana, Otjiwarongo, Tsumeb, and Walvis Bay. We are a registered Welfare Organization (WO6), here to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote animal welfare in Namibia. Our organization assists animals in need through education, action, and provision of care. The SPCA plays a pivotal role in rescuing and assisting animals that are neglected, abandoned, and abused all over Namibia. The SPCA’s numerous shelters and foster caregiver networks can house anywhere from about 20 to over 400 animals at any given time. We are primarily funded by donations from generous private individuals and corporate businesses.
